What is Gingival Recession?
Exposed roots are the result of gum recession. Recession causes sensitive roots and an unattractive smile. Genetically, each patient has a different thickness of gum tissue. Some are born with thin gums that recede even if they are conscientious about their oral health. With wear and tear of time, even normal gums are worn away. Recession is not an infection but an anatomical condition.

Gum Recession may be associated with a frenum pulling at the gum margin. The frenum is a naturally occurring muscle attachment located between the upper or lower front teeth. It is normal to have a frenum, but if it pulls on the gum, recession can occur. Recession can also occur when gums are stretched during orthodontics.
The first sign of gum recession may be sensitivity to brushing or to hot and cold. People with minor gum recession are predisposed to more advanced recession. This exposes more roots beyond the enamel, leading to decay and erosion. When gum recession occurs, teeth lose their natural defense against bacteria and trauma. Unfortunately, bone loss occurs along with gum recession. Microsurgical gingival grafting can correct these problems.
